How to Draw Wolverine

Wolverine Drawing
Welcome to this drawing lesson.
Here we learn how to draw Wolverine, the X-Men mutant with a fierce character, super regeneration powers, and a metal upgrade on his skeleton which enables him to shoot claws out of his fists whenever he likes.
What an awesome guy is that?

So let's get this beast of man on paper, shall we?

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 1: Sketch

At the beginning we draw a very loose sketch of all body parts.
The actual shape is not so important here, only the size and position of the body parts matter.

Sketch Head & Torso

Start by lightly sketching in a slightly tilted head and the torso.
The torso should be about twice as large as the head.

Sketch Arms & Blocks for Fists
Loosely sketch in the arms.
Place boxes instead of fists at their ends to keep things simple for now.

In my final picture the claws of Wolverine will cover a part of his face.
If you don't want this to happen in your picture, you can place one fist a bit lower, so that it aims below the chin.

Sketch Legs
Add a belt below the torso, and then sketch in Wolverine's legs and feet.

Watch out for the proportions. Everything is measured in the height of the head:
From the knees upwards to the belt is the distance of 1 head.
From the knees downwards to the ground the distance is 2 heads.
And the feet on the ground cover an area of 1 head in width.

You don't have to be super precise with this, just use it as a guideline.

If you like, you can also place the legs of Wolverine a little bit different. I wanted him in such a low and broad fighting stance, but you can divert from that. You can make him kick, or whatever would look cool in your opinion.

Having done that, the sketch of the body is complete.
So now we can go into the details.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 2: Fists

We turn the boxes into fists now.
In my opinion, this is a great way of drawing fists in general.
You first start with boxes, and then you transform them into fists as shown in the pictures below.

And now Wolverine's fists are ready for combat!
Let's move on to the other body parts and prepare them, too.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 3: Head

Detailed Head Shape

It is time to give a clear shape to the head.
The picture above is pointing out the most important parts.

When you are done with the outer shape, you are ready to draw in the details of the face. Check out the next few images to see how to do this.

NoseFacial Details

In the last picture the sideburns are shown in red, because I totally forgot to add them until the very end of the drawing.
But you can draw them in right now, of course.
So don't be surprised when they miss in the next images. In the end they will be there again.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 4:

Shoulders & Arms

Before we get started with the shoulders, draw in a few hair strands hanging down the forehead, like you can see in the picture below.

Shoulders & Neck

Give a clear shape to the shoulder and neck area of Wolverine and erase the sketchy lines you drew before.

Arm Shape
Now draw in clean lines for the arms.
Take care to let muscles and elbows stand out clearly.

My Wolverine is going to wear gloves, and that is the reason why I didn't connect the arms with the fists. I'll add the glove-sleeves in the space left between them.
If you want Wolverine to fight bare-fisted instead, just draw the lines all the way to the fists.

Gloves & Arm Details
To add the gloves is very simple.
Just draw in two slightly curved lines that reach over the borders of the arm, and then connect their ends with the fist.

Also draw in a few lines to bring out the shape of muscles, sinews and bones, so that the arms don't look plane and lifeless.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 5: Torso

And on to the torso we go.
Again, we apply the same steps to it like we already did with the other body parts.
First, we define its shape with clear lines, and then we add details.

Torso Shape
Torso Details
Here are a lot of details to add.
I point them out, before you overlook something:

1. Sinews on throat and neck
2. Collar bone
3. Nipples
4. Ribs slightly showing on the sides
5. Bottom of ribcage showing above belly
6. Belly button

Belly & Belt
And finally, we add muscles to the belly.

Before we move on to the legs, you can already draw in the belt.
If you don't want to, your Wolverine can wear pants without belt, however.
You can also change the belt buckle to something fancier. Mine is pretty simple here, but you could draw in a dragon head, a skull, or whatever you think would suit Wolverine well.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 6: Legs & Boots

The legs and feet are the last body parts we have to complete.
Once more we replace our sketchy lines with a clear drawing.

Leg Shape
Boot Shape
Boot Details
Boot Decoration
In the last step you can come up with your own boot design, again.
The boots are an important part of the character's style.
So modify them according to your own taste.

How to Draw Wolverine - Step 7: Claws

Wolverine's Claws

Last but not least we draw Wolverine's claws, his most unique features, and the reason why we love this guy!
They are not very easy to draw, however, so take your time with this.

Note that the claws are not growing out of the knuckles, but from the space between the knuckles.

I recommend that you first sketch them in very lightly and then slowly bring them more and more into a clear shape, with a lot of erasing and correcting going on.
You will also have to erase parts of the face below the claws.

And with that Wolverine is ready to slice and dice!!!
Yehaaaaaaaaaaa!

Shaded Wolverine

Now you can still color or shade your wolverine drawing.
Or you just keep your clean line drawing, if you prefer.

I hope you enjoyed drawing Wolverine just as much as I did.
Hopefully, I will develop similar mutations in the near future and the you have to watch out for me!

Until then, I'll keep creating more drawing lessons.
See you later.
