How to Draw Marge Simpson
Learn how to
draw Marge Simpson, the mother of the famous yellow family, in this
drawing lesson.
She certainly is the woman with the best looking haircut ever.

So let's get started.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 1. Proportions
Before
you look at the next two pictures and get a heart attack, let me tell
you
that you don't need to draw all these lines, and that you can draw
Marge entirely freehand.
But I personally found it very helpful to take this approach, because
otherwise my drawing would have gotten out of shape.

If
you don't want to draw Marge freehand, but want to map out her body
with the help of a few guidelines, draw what is shown in the left
picture.
It is a small square with three lines above it, and five lines below it.
The distance between the lines is as large as the square's side-length.
In
the right picture you can see that Marge's face fits perfectly into the
square. We can also see that
her haircut has the size of two and a half squares, and we don't have
to guess it.
This approach also ensures that Marge will fit on your paper. You won't
run out of space for the feet at the end.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 2. Face

Begin drawing Marge's face with the eyes.
Place
two big circles into the square. The red line marks the square's
middle, and you can see that the circles reach a bit more into the
upper than the lower half. But more importantly, leave the same amount
of space on the left and the right side between eyes and square.
Add the short and round nose in this step.
Let it cover a part of the left eye.

Now draw in the upper lip.
Let
a line start from the eye, just beside the nose, and go down towards
the
square's left border. From the touching point, you draw a flat curve
spanning almost the entire square. It reaches just below the edge of
the right eye.
Draw a tiny curve for a smile to the corner of the mouth there.
You can erase the square's right side, and replace it with an ear and a
line for a neck.
Then squeeze in the small lower lip between upper lip and square.
It is not sitting in the middle, but a bit towards the left.
Also draw a short straight line going down from its end.

Let's outline Marge's haircut around the face.
Draw
a short curve going upwards from the left eye. Then draw an arc
consisting of four bulges along the square's top. In the middle this
arc should touch the square, and it should end at the square's right
side.
From there you draw two more bulges of hair going straight down to the
ear.
Now you can erase the square, because we don't need it for orientation
any more.
Afterwards we add the last few details to Marge's face.
Draw two small circles for pupils into the eyes, and four curved
eyelashes along the top of each eye.
Also outline the inner ear with two short curves.
Marge's face is complete.
Next, we draw her crazy skyscraper-haircut.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 3. Haircut

First,
sketch in the haircut's shape very lightly without using any bulges
right now. Let it reach up into the middle between the last two lines,
and lean slightly towards the right side. Also take note where it
touches the head at the eye and below the ear.
Once
you have the basic shape outlined, you can now retrace it with bulges.
Give roughly the same size to each small curve you draw.
The arrow points out where I decided to let the hair curve even more
towards the right than my initial sketch.
Now
you can erase the horizontal guidelines, and also the
sketchy lines where it is easily doable. You don't have to erase
everything in the tiny corners between the bulges. We can do that in
the last step much more easily.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 4. Torso Sketch
Sketch in Marge's body now.
The back goes down pretty straight from the neck and reaches a bit
below the first proportional line.
At the front, the breast reaches its widest point exactly on that line.
In
the next section, the waist is the narrowest in the middle between the
two lines. From there Marge's skirt curves gently downwards and stops
just above the fourth proportional line.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 5. Legs Sketch

Scroll down to the legs.
Loosely sketch in legs and feet.
Place the heels on the last proportional line.
Draw one foot pointing more towards the left, and the other one
pointing a bit more towards the bottom.
In case you want to have a size estimation:
The feet are roughly as long as the face is broad, measured from the
back of the neck to tip of the upper lip.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 6. Arms Sketch
Sketch in the arms.
One of them is largely hidden and just hanging down beside the body,
while the other one is rested on her hip.
Use
the proportional lines for your orientation again. You can see that the
elbow of the lifted arm lies exactly on the first line, and that its
hand is resting on the second line.
Draw the second arm reaching slightly below the second proportional
line.
Now we have a well proportioned sketch of Marge's body, but it is still
pretty rough.
In the next steps we'll clean it up and add details.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 7. Fine Tuning and
Details

To give the right width to the body, we compare it to the face.
The
red line, reaching from the eye to the back of the ear, has the same
length as the other red lines. You can see that this is the width of
the chest, as well as the width of the waist. Correct this in your
drawing if necessary, and also clean up your sketchy lines a bit.
Now
draw in the top of Marge's dress. Let it wrap around her chest in the
front, and draw a line across the chest, ending below the arm.
Also draw in a necklace with overlapping circles around her throat.
I
already erased the proportional lines in this picture, except at the
feet. You can do this too now, or you erase everything in the last step.
Clean up the arms, replacing the sketchy lines with smooth ones.
Then add the fingers to the hand.
Of
two fingers you can only see the knuckles as two small bulges, but the
third finger is visible, reaching up behind the hand's palm.
Draw only a very small line on the other hand to indicate the beginning
of a finger.
Erase the line which is covered by arm and hand, afterwards.
How to Draw Marge Simpson - 8. Feet and Shoes
Clean up the lines of legs and feet.
Erase the fuzzy edges of your sketchy strokes and redraw the outlines
carefully.
Afterwards you can erase all the proportional lines once and for all.

Draw the outline of the shoes across the feet and add a heel at their
end.
Then
erase the separation between the heels and the rest of the shoes, and
draw a very small line from the edge of the heels disappearing below
the shoes.

The mom with the coolest haircut is complete.
Now
you can retrace your picture with a black pen, fine-liner, or something
similar, and erase the pencil lines afterwards. This will give you a
clean cartoon look. You just have to watch out that you draw the black
lines with a steady hand, since you won't be able to erase them again.
Afterwards you can color your Marge Simpson drawing.
